Under-17 4x4 Driver Training
· full understanding and effective communication of the principles of safe off road driving
· extensive experience of off road driving and the behaviour of 4x4 vehicles while driving off road
· familiar with the principles and methods of coaching
· understands the value of using a coaching approach with younger drivers
· able to adapt approach to the age and maturity of the learner
· able to set up exercises in an off road environment that are safe and adapted to the level of experience and skill of the student
· understand the relevance of off road driving skills to on road driving
· able to ensure correct principles for road driving are integrated in all off road driving activities
· understands the GDE matrix, and how to apply the model to young driver coaching
· able to integrate a focus on GDE levels 3 and 4.
· recognise the value in maximising accompanied driving time to improve novice driver safety.
· effectively build on young driver enthusiasm to positively develop their skills and responsibility
· understand and actively encourage self-assessment and reflection
· able to coach the basic vehicle control skills effectively while integrating broader personal skills development
· able to intervene from passenger seat if needed
· able to use dual controls effectively when fitted
· be familiar with exercises to give youngsters an understanding of key novice driver risks, in particular of distraction and peer pressure
· encourage respect for the environment and other off road users and to foster courteous and considerate attitudes to driving
