Under-17 Driver Instruction
· certificate holder must have an existing ADI qualification
· familiar with the principles and methods of coaching
· understand the importance of using a coaching approach with younger drivers
· able to adapt approach to the age and maturity of the learner
· effectively build on young driver enthusiasm to positively develop their skills and responsibility
· understand and actively encourage self-assessment and reflection
· able to set up exercises in a closed environment that are relevant to road driving, and provide suitable context for learning
· able to coach the basic vehicle control skills effectively while integrating broader personal skills development
· understands the GDE matrix, and how to apply the model to young driver coaching
· able to present a course of exercises that help to improve skills at all four levels of the GDE Matrix, with particular focus on levels 3 and 4
· recognise the importance of maximising accompanied driving time to improve novice driver safety
· able to intervene from passenger seat if needed
· able to use dual controls effectively when fitted
· be familiar with exercises to give youngsters an understanding of key novice driver risks, in particular of distraction and peer pressure
· encourage respect for other road users and to foster courteous and considerate attitudes to driving
· use the coaching sessions to encourage the student to maintain a "lifelong learning" approach to their driving
